Ford releases VW’s MEB platform after two cars

As is known, Ford is coming up with a set of electric cars that sit on Volkswagen’s MEB platform. It literally seems to stick with ‘a couple’. After two electric models with Volkswagen technology, Ford seems to have had enough.

Ford and Volkswagen have maintained a warm relationship with each other. The two brands have found each other in the field of commercial vehicles, among other things. For example, the new Volkswagen Amarok is based on the Ford Ranger and the new Ford Tourneo Connect is basically a Volkswagen Caddy. The two brands have also found each other in the field of passenger cars. For example, Ford will use the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform for two electric models, including a mid-sized SUV of which the brand recently showed a teaser plate. However, it seems to stick with two Volkswagen-based EVs.

Martin Sanders – director of Ford’s European EV branch ‘Model e’ – says that using Volkswagen’s MEB platform is only a temporary solution. After two models, the “transition period” that Sanders says saved Ford about two years of development time is over. Then Ford comes with electric cars that simply use their own technology.

Ford will probably pull the curtain on its first MEB-based EV within the next few months. As mentioned, that will be a medium-sized electric SUV-like. The second and final model is also likely to be an electric long-legged one. Ford’s two MEB models will soon roll off the assembly line in Cologne. Production of the Fiesta will soon be discontinued there. In Valencia, Spain – where Ford currently not only produces the Kuga, but also the soon to disappear Galaxy and S-Max – Ford will build EVs on its own platform. From 2030, Ford wants to sell only electric passenger cars in Europe.
