Ford is launching a ‘smart mirror’ to give Transit and Transit Custom drivers a better view to the rear. This interior mirror can also be installed in older vans.
Anyone who has ever been on the road with a closed van without windows in the back knows that the view to the rear is quite disappointing. It is possible to drive on only the exterior mirrors and blind spot mirrors, but a whole part behind the car remains invisible. To respond to this, Ford has developed a digital rear-view mirror that, thanks to a camera on the back of the bus, can show what is happening there. If you simply want to have a view of what is happening in the bus itself behind you, you can also use the interior mirror equipped with an LCD screen as a normal mirror. The brightness can also be adjusted according to how light it is.
Such a solution is certainly not new, but it is for the Transit and Transit Custom. Ford states that the mirror is available for these two vans with rear doors without windows in them. It can be installed on Post-2014 Transits and Post-2012 Transits Custom. It is a useful but by no means very cheap solution: it costs € 967 and it can be ordered and installed at any Ford dealer.
