Ford was set to announce two electric platforms later today. These are electric bases for passenger cars and heavier models that are used at Ford in addition to Volkswagens MEB platform.
Ford is of course already busy in the EV field. The brand already has the Mustang Mach-E on a ‘dedicated’ EV platform and this week presented the F-150 Lightning, a fully electric version of its wildly popular F-150. Nevertheless, the brand has to keep going, because after all, every competitor that takes itself seriously is also in the process of electrifying.
That is why the brand is said to be working on two new EV platforms, which must be operated side by side. One is for smaller cars and SUVs, the other for the full-size trucks and SUVs that are especially popular in the US. In both cases, they are, in fact, the successors to the platforms on which the Mustang Mach-E and Ford F-150 Lightning are built. The latter is of course still based on the regular F-150, but in the future Ford’s electric pick-up must have a base specially developed for EVs. Right: just like the competition from, among others, General Motors and Tesla.
GE2
The smaller platform will reportedly be called GE2 and is therefore the successor to the GE base on which the current Ford Mustang Mach-E, the pioneer at Ford in the EV field, rests. This platform should appear in 2023 and will subsequently be used for many Fords and Lincolns.
The total number of Ford electric platforms will then be three. The brand is also working on models based on Volkswagens MEB-based, on which, among other things, the Volkswagen ID3 rests. Fords with Volkswagen technology, however, are reportedly intended mainly or exclusively for Europe, where the aforementioned ‘own’ platforms will play a greater role worldwide.
Not yet official
The information comes from Reuters news agency, which reports that Ford will officially announce the plans today. When that happens, this post will be updated. Ford plans to invest as much as $ 22 billion between now and 2025 to electrify its fleet.
