Ford’s Equator Sport is the latest SUV

Ford is about to unveil a brand new SUV: the Equator Sport. AutoWeek can show you the first pictures of that new SUV.

AutoWeek has again managed to find the first photos of a new model from the database of the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Technology. It is a new SUV from Ford, a car that listens to the name Equator Sport. Anyone who closely follows AutoWeek’s news about models to be released abroad will undoubtedly know that Ford already sells an SUV simply called Equator. This Equator Sport comes a step below that.

As you might have guessed, this Equator Sport is an SUV that Ford will only sell in China. If we look at the Chinese model range, we already come across various models that are completely unknown here. We know of course the Evos, which was a lot to do recently, but only really expanded is Ford’s Chinese SUV range. That consists of the previous generation Kuga that is sold as Escape and the Edge Plus, a longer version of the SUV adapted for the Chinese market that you could buy in the Netherlands until recently as simply Edge. Ford also supplies the Everest, the Explorer, ‘our Kuga’ as Sharp Kuga and the Territory. The latter is in fact a Yusheng S330 from JAC, a Chinese brand with which Ford has a partnership, just like with Changan. JAC is also the brand with which Ford has developed the Equator, together they now come with the smaller Equator Sport. Are we still there?

The Ford Equator Sport is 4.63 meters long, 1.94 wide and 1.71 meters high. This makes it a lot smaller than the 4.91 meter long Equator that we were able to show you earlier. In width, the two are equal to each other, although the Equator Sport is roughly 5 centimeters lower. The wheelbase of the Equator Sport measures 2.73 meters while the larger Equator at 2.87 meters has an extra 14 centimeters between the front and rear axles. The Equator Sport has a front that is very similar to that of the non-Sport, but has meaner looking headlamps. The rear of the Equator is strikingly similar to that of the Kuga, but it is completely different. Under the hood of the 1,600 kilo Equator Sport is a 1.490 cc 1.5, a four-cylinder petrol engine that delivers 170 hp.

You can already feel it coming: the Equator Sport is not coming to Europe. Would such an SUV be something for the Netherlands? Purely in terms of dimensions, the car would end up in the Netherlands between the Kuga and Explorer. Let us know in the comments.
