Ford gives its largest SUV a facelift. The more than 5.3 meter long Ford Expedition is not only sharpened on the outside, but also gets a thoroughly renewed interior.

Recently we were able to show you the first photos of what should be by far Ford’s largest ST model ever, the upcoming ST version of the updated Expedition. That facelifted Ford Expedition has now been introduced to the American public. An ST version doesn’t seem to be coming, but Ford’s competitor to cars like the Chevrolet Tahoe and new Jeep Wagoneer does get a new extra adventurous version and a sporty Stealth flavor, but we start with the exterior changes.

Ford Expedition, pre-facelift (2017-2021)

As a resident of Europe, the chance that you have the current generation Ford Expedition on your retina is not too great. The big brother of the Ford Explorer is not for sale here. The current Expedition is already the fourth generation of Ford’s colossus, an SUV that, in its current form presented in 2017, stretches over a distance of 5.33 meters, gets an almost completely new front. Using a modified version of the ladder-frame chassis of the previous generation F-150, the Expedition features new headlamps constructed from C-shaped LED daytime running lights and an actual headlamp now housed between the slats extending from the grille into the rear grille. run through the lamp section. The rear lights retain their shape, but are given a new meaning. In addition, even the complete tailgate is new, because Ford has made the license plate compartment considerably smaller. The chrome strip running over the entire width of the valve also returns on the renewed Expedition, but is now lower. Model name Expedition is now proudly written above it and you can no longer read it in the chrome-colored trim.

Screens with screens

At least as interesting are the adjustments that Ford makes to the interior of the Expedition. The entire dashboard is new. The ventilation grilles are a lot smaller, but what is happening on the center console is more striking. Here, the display of the Expedition presented in 2017, which is somewhat surrounded by physical buttons, can be replaced as an option with a huge 15.5-inch vertical display, the design of which, complete with ‘transparent’ selection button, we know from the Mustang Mach-E. The standard screen measures 12 inches. Behind the steering wheel is a new 12.4 inch digital instrumentation.

As mentioned, an ST version is not included, but Ford is introducing a new Expedition with Stealth Performance Package that closely resembled an ST variant in packed form. This version has, among other things, 22-inch black alloy, a stronger chassis and specific bumper work. Regardless of the version chosen – there is also a Platinum version overloaded with glimmers – there is a 446 hp and 692 Nm strong 3.5 V6 under the hood in the Expedition that is tied to a ten-speed automatic. At the rougher end of the spectrum is the new Timberline trim. The Expedition Timberline is dressed in a similar way to the Explorer Timberline unveiled this year, but has to do without plastic wheel arch edges. It does have rougher bumper work, complete with skid plates and red accents. The Expedition Timberline, further finished with black details, also stands a little higher on its legs and has 33-inch Goodyear off-road rubber. Ford is proud to report that the Expedition has greater ground clearance than the Wagoneer, a major competitor to the car that has undoubtedly led Ford to renew the Expedition so thoroughly on the inside.

Sale

Last year, Ford sold 77,838 Expeditions in the United States, about ten percent less than in 2019. The Expedition could use an impulse in that regard. In comparison: last year 227,217 of the 5.05-meter-long Explorer were sold in the United States alone, 21 percent more than in 2019.
