Role in diesel scandal

Rupert Stadler, the former CEO of Audi, is likely facing a prison sentence. The fallen CEO risks up to ten years in prison for fraud, because of his role in the diesel scandal.
Almost five years ago, then Audi CEO Rupert Stadler was arrested for alleged involvement in the diesel scandal that came to light in 2015. He was almost immediately succeeded by the Dutchman Bram Schot and did not return to Audi. An official indictment followed in 2019 and Stadler first issued a statement in early 2021. He stated bluntly that he was ‘too busy’ to discover that diesel engine emissions were being tampered with. We are now two years further and the further defense of Stadler seems to be holding up too little to escape the dance. According to Automotive News the court in Munich indicated on Tuesday that the allegation of fraud against Stadler is well founded.
A final ruling is expected sometime in the coming months. Stadler faces a prison sentence of up to ten years for fraud. However, a settlement could take place if Stadler confesses in full. In that case, he may not have to go to jail, but he will undoubtedly receive a huge fine.
