It took a while, but Fortnite is officially available to download and install on iPhone again. Here’s how!
Fortnite is back on iPhone: download and install!
You may remember, but in August 2020, Fortnite was removed from the App Store. For many avid players, this also meant the end of their Fortnite adventures on iPhone and iPad. You could no longer play Fortnite on your Apple devices.
There have been a few ways in the years that followed that you could still play via a detour. But those were only stopgap solutions and they worked rather poorly.
But not anymore, because Epic Games (the makers of Fortnite) have their own App Store where you can officially download and play the game on your iPhone. The games are also available in the AltStore (you have to click on the big Epic Games ad in the store).
To download and install Fortnite on your iPhone, you first need to download the Epic Games app store. After that, you can download and play Fortnite on your iPhone from that store. Please note: this is only possible from within the EU. Outside of the EU, you cannot download Fortnite.
Download and Install Fortnite on iPhone
- Surf on your iPhone to Epic Games website;
- Tap ‘Install’ or ‘Install on iPhone’;
- Tap ‘OK’ when you get the ‘App Installation’ prompt. Then go to ‘Settings’ on your iPhone and tap ‘Allow apps from Epic Games Inc.’ and tap ‘Allow’. Return to the Safari web browser.
- Tap the blue ‘Install’ button.
- Select ‘Install App Marketplace’;
- Once the Epic Games app is installed, tap on it;
- Tap ‘Accept’ the first time;
- Tap the ‘Install’ button under Fortnite and ‘Install App’.
After downloading and installing Fortnite on your iPhone, you will need to update the game. Please note that downloading the files can take a while, as the update is quite large. You will also need to have enough space available on your iPhone.
Why Did Fortnite Disappear From the App Store?
In 2020, Epic Games introduced its own payment system in the popular game Fortnite. They did this to circumvent the mandatory 30 percent commission on in-app purchases, such as a new outfit for your Fortnite character. This went against the rules of the App Store, after which the game was removed.
Then Apple was sued by Epic. Epic Games accuses Apple of monopoly behavior, among other things. The judge then indicated that the game may remain blocked, but that Apple may not delete the developer account of Epic Games. The important Unreal Engine that is linked to this account is used by many games in the App Store.
After all these years, Epic Games and Apple are still at loggerheads. But luckily, there is now a way for gamers to play Fortnite on their iPhone again.
