Four small EVs from Volkswagen, Cupra and Skoda from Spain

There is a series of compact electric models from the Volkswagen Group in the pipeline that will be produced in Spain. It turns out that there are not three, but four!

Seat gives an insight into its financial results for 2022 and immediately looks ahead to what is to come. For the Seat car brand, this appears to be remarkably little. Seat SA almost only talked about continuing the growth of Cupra and about what will be built in Spain. That turns out to be quite a lot. We already knew that Seat SA will be responsible for the production of a set of new compact electric models from the Volkswagen Group. It turns out that there are not three, but four.

In 2025, the production version of the Volkswagen ID2all Concept will run off the production line alongside the Cupra UrbanRebel at Seat’s factory in Martorell. The Cupra UrbanRebel will also be given a different name, as it turned out during the press conference. During the Barcelona Motor Show that takes place in May, it will probably become clear what the car, possibly named after a Spanish location, will be called. There will soon be two more electric models from Volkswagen Group from Spain. They will not be built in Martorell, but in Pamplona, where the Volkswagen Polo, T-Cross and Taigo are currently seeing the light of day. It concerns a compact electric crossover from Skoda and an electric crossover of which Volkswagen announced the arrival during the presentation of the ID2all. According to the German Automobilwoche, that compact electric crossover from Volkswagen will be called ID2X. After all, model name ID3 is already in use. The four new compact EVs will all be placed on the MEB Entry platform and will be front-wheel drive in the base.

ID2 or Polo?

Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schaefer said something interesting about the production version of the ID2all. According to Schaefer, it is not yet excluded that the car will not be called ID2, but simply Polo. “The question is, of course, what the Polo will cost after Euro 7 enters. It could just become €3,000 more expensive. Calling the ID2 ‘Polo’ is not my first choice, but I can’t rule it out yet,” said the CEO .

In Spain, a total of 3 million compact EVs from the Volkswagen Group must be built between 2025 and 2030. Cupra CEO Wayne Griffiths also said that it is now being investigated whether Cupra can enter the North American market. Cupra will launch the Terramar and the fully electric Tavascan in 2024. Cupra has set itself the goal of selling 500,000 cars annually.
