We often think that electric cars are going to be the big thing. But outside of Northern Europe, China and perhaps North America, adoption is still extremely low. That is why Peugeot announces that it will continue to build petrol and diesel cars from 2030, except in Europe, where the delivery program will consist entirely of EVs.
From 2030, all Peugeot models in Europe will be electric, CEO Linda Jackson told Automotive News Europe. Fuel Peugeots will still be available for international buyers. The other brands of Stellantis (the merged company of Groupe PSA and Fiat-Chrysler) are already switching to electric power earlier: DS in 2026, Alfa Romeo in 2027, Opel in 2028.
New Peugeot 308 will not be fully electric until 2023
Currently 70 percent of the Peugeot range is electrified (hybrid or fully electric). In three years that will be 100 percent. Only the Peugeot 208 and 2008 are currently electric versions. An EV variant of the new 308 will only be available in two years. The next generation 3008 will also get an electric powertrain.
One fifth of all 208s sold are electric
According to Jackson, 20 percent of Peugeot 208s sold are fully electric. That is more than forecasts, which were 10 to 15 percent. With the 2008 the percentage of EVs is slightly lower. That’s because people who buy that model want a car that can take longer trips, Jackson said.
