Google’s keyboard app, Gboard, comes with Material You-style appearance tweaks. 9to5Google dived into the code of the app and made several findings. That they will definitely get in, that’s always the question, but the chance is there.

If you tap the icon in the top left corner of Gboard, you’ll see various tools, layout options, and shortcuts. Gboard 12.1 is now available in the beta channel and shows a Material You variant of the ball. The button in the corner is still round, but a 3×3 grid icon can now be seen. In addition, it has been spotted that the shortcuts now have the well-known rounded rectangles that we know from Material You.

In addition, the backgrounds of everything within the keyboard have become a bit lighter, which you see especially when you choose more colorful themes. In the bar you can now use one more shortcut, bringing the total to five, partly thanks to the removal of the key with the dots on the right. However, Gboard is working on the option to choose how many appear. After all, if you only need one or two, it would show just that little bit better.

Gboard’s new design also ensures that the grid is no longer centered. It is expected that this will allow it to add more features in the future. Another Material You update revolves around the settings. The basic list gets bigger, while the buttons now all look like Material You prescribes.

Again, when all this will come to Gboard and whether it will all make it through beta testing remains to be seen. In any case, these are welcome changes, so that thanks to design there is more room for other or perhaps even new possibilities within Google’s smart keyboard.
