General Motors still remains active in Australia

General Motors lets Holden die a silent death in Australia and seemed to rip its hands off Australia completely. The latter will not happen now: the Corvette will simply remain in the showrooms under a special brand name.

At the beginning of this year, a harsh message came to Holden: parent company General Motors pulled the plug. Thus, almost 90 years of GM in Australia come to an end. It seemed so, at least, because apparently GM is not quite done with it yet. Holden is admittedly still doomed for the time being and that is not without a struggle. Despite the fact that GM will have fewer friends in Australia than before because of its dealings with Holden, the company will continue to try.

The Australian Carsguide says it has received confirmation from GM that the Corvette C8 unveiled last year will be new in the showroom Down Under. General Motors puts a separate label on it; GMSV. That stands for General Motors Specialty Vehicles. The Australian Corvette listens to the name GMSV Corvette in full. It will probably just have a Corvette logo on it.

The sporty American is not even the only car with which GM stays in Australia. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 will also remain available there. Even though GM is done with Holden, it will not let go of Australia. At the same time, this is also good news for dozens of Holden dealers who have seen their businesses go up in smoke. GM will reportedly start selling the GMSV models at 40 to 60 (former) Holden dealers. That seems like quite a lot of dealers for only the Corvette and the Silverado, so who knows, maybe the GMSV offering will get even bigger in the coming years.
