Verstappen sixth after collision with Hamilton

George Russell takes first F1 victory in Brazil

George Russell has taken his first victory in Formula 1 in Brazil. Lewis Hamilton was second after colliding with Max Verstappen early in the race. Partly because of this, Verstappen finished in sixth place.

Max Verstappen has not been able to register a fifteenth victory in his successful season in Formula 1. The world champion collided with Lewis Hamilton early in the race in the Brazilian GP and had to go to the pitlane with damage to his Red Bull. The stewards blamed him for the collision and imposed a five-second time penalty on him. The Dutchman worked his way up to sixth place from a position in the rear. He overtook his teammate Sergio Perez in the final phase, to the discontent of the Mexican. Verstappen then refused to let Pérez pass again at the finish despite team orders. The Mexican is involved in the battle for the vice world championship with Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc.

The setback at Verstappen paved the way for a dominant performance by George Russell. The Briton led from start to finish and took his first F1 victory at the Interlagos circuit. It was also Mercedes’ first win this year. Hamilton overcame the collision with Verstappen and drove a strong race, in which the seven-time world champion worked his way up from eighth to second place. Carlos Sainz finished third in his Ferrari, ahead of Leclerc and Fernando Alonso (Alpine).
