The Netherlands has relatively strict speed limits and also quite often automatic enforcement. It is therefore relatively easy for foreigners to run into the lamp. However, the Germans take the cake.
Of course it was quite likely that most foreign speed riders come from one of our neighboring countries. Germany ‘wins’ over Belgium in this respect, according to figures from the Ministry of Justice and Security. In the period from May to August, no fewer than 111,099 Germans were caught with a traffic violation. This means that our eastern neighbors account for more than a third of all traffic violations committed by foreigners in the Netherlands. It was mainly about speeding violations, which was the case 105,139 times. Germans are also used to driving fast as the ‘fastest country in the world’, although the Netherlands is in second place.
The Belgians accounted for 95,756 traffic violations, of which 90,491 times the speed limit was exceeded. Last year the difference with the Germans was considerably greater: then German motorists ticked away 141,299 violations and Belgian drivers 83,493. The temporarily largely closed Dutch-Belgian border probably played an important role in this.
Poland is in third place. These were good for 38,069 traffic violations from May to August 2021, and here too the vast majority (37,304) is speeding. It is striking that the French follow at some distance in fourth place, with 27,821 traffic violations, of which 27,652 speeding was the violation. Even more striking, however, is the fifth place for Romania, which is not exactly around the corner. It may largely be people who live/work here temporarily in the Netherlands.
