Anyone who takes driving lessons should count on an average price per hour of driving lesson of €47.17. This is apparent from a recent study by the Central Bureau for Driving Licenses (CBR). Remarkable: candidates need on average more hours of driving lessons to obtain their driving license than two years ago.
Research by the Central Bureau for Driving Skills (CBR), in which more than 2,300 brand new successful owners of a driving license took part, shows that the average price of an hour of driving lesson is €47.17. The research also shows that candidates took an average of 43 hours of driving lessons to be allowed to drive. That is 5 hours more than found in a similar study in 2019.
According to the CBR, the increase in the number of hours of driving lessons required may be related to interruptions in the training process as a result of the various lockdowns. The CBR reports that it is also possible that candidates respond to the appeal of the governing body to better prepare for the practical exam. In any case, the success rate has increased. In October this year, 51.6 percent of the candidates passed the practical exam in one go. In 2019, that percentage was 2.5 percentage points lower.

According to the CBR, the total costs of obtaining a driving license are on average €2,750, which is €300 more than in 2019. This €2,750 does not only include the costs for driving lessons and the theory and practical exam, but also the costs for applying for a health certificate, passport photos and the driver’s license itself.
Getting a driver’s license will be even more expensive next year. The CBR will increase most of its rates from next year. A survey conducted among driving school holders by the trade journal Rijschool Pro recently showed that 65 percent of driving schools will therefore increase the rates for the practical B exam and driving lessons next year. A practical exam B will cost a driving school €122.50 next year instead of €120.
