Getting up early is often associated with being more productive, mindful, and successful. You can find out under which circumstances this applies and when getting up early can also be problematic.

Getting up early: these are the advantages

The main advantage of getting up early is obvious: If you start your day earlier, you have more time in the morning. In contrast to the evening hours, when you might still be working or taking care of family and household, you have more peace in the morning. Roommates and family members are still sleeping and there is less noise outside in the streets.

Getting up early can help you start your day more relaxed and mindful. In order to be able to fully enjoy this effect, you should observe a few tips:

  • Don’t turn on your cell phone right away, enjoy having the morning all to yourself and not being available yet.
  • Use the time to prepare yourself mentally for the day and upcoming projects and challenges. For example, you can say certain intentions out loud to yourself or write them down.
  • A feeling of gratitude helps to start the day more satisfied and calm. For example, every morning you can list or write three things that you are grateful for that day.
  • If you get up early enough, you can use the morning to go for a walk, draw, read, yoga to practice or pursue other hobbies. At the end of the day, we often don’t have enough strength and capacity for this. As a result, we focus our lives heavily on urgent matters and neglect things that simply make us happy.

There is evidence of a link between success and getting up early. A study studied 367 students and found that people who are most productive in the morning are generally more proactive than people who work best in the evening. And proactive people should be more successful in the professional world.

Of the Behavioral scientist Jon Levy points out, however, that not all people are automatically happier and more productive when they wake up early. In some cases, this can even have the opposite effect: if people without predisposition force themselves to get up early, it can lack of sleep promote. Getting up early combined with a sleep deficit makes us less focused and less efficient, says Levy.

Getting enough sleep also goes hand in hand with increased wellbeing connected. Constant lack of sleep can therefore lead to general malaise and negative emotions. When we are most productive and energetic varies from person to person.
