Loading capacity and cost reduction are important

The share of electric cars in the world will also increase significantly this year, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). It is expected that 17 million electric cars will be sold this year, compared to 14 million last year.
Sales are rising more strongly in some regions than in others, says IEA CEO Fatih Birol. The rising sales figures are mainly due to China, where the government encourages the purchase of an electric car with subsidies. In the Netherlands, interest in electric driving is actually declining, the ANWB reported last week. Reasons include the high purchase price and the inability to charge at home.
The IEA emphasizes that affordability is an important condition for boosting sales figures. In Europe and the United States, cars with a combustion engine are still cheaper, while in China most electric cars are cheaper. The number of charging points must also be significantly expanded, according to the IEA. By 2035, charging capacity must increase sixfold to keep up with growth.
In the first quarter of this year, 25 percent more electric cars were sold worldwide than in the same period a year earlier. The sales figures of the first quarter are roughly equal to the sales figures of electric cars in the whole of 2020.
