General Motors does not waste any time: the group is preparing various American production facilities for the production of new EVs. An investment of $ 2 billion (€ 1.6 billion) will prepare the Spring Hill plant in Tennessee for the production of the Cadillac Lyriq, among other things. The facility will be GM’s third EV plant.
After Factory ZERO and Orion Assembly, Spring Hill is the third American General Motors factory to be suitable for the production of EVs. Initially, production of the Cadillac Lyriq will take place there, alongside that of the XT6 and XT5. GM is not halfway through the renovation: to produce EVs, new machines, conveyor belts and other tools are needed. In addition, Spring Hill will receive extra spray booths to accommodate the additional production. Refurbishment works at the factory will begin immediately, according to GM. In total, GM is investing a whopping $ 4.5 billion (more than € 3.7 billion) in American EV production. That is significantly more than the amount invested in the production of the conventional models. GM will allocate ‘only’ $ 149 million (€ 125 million) for this in the coming period.
It is not new that General Motors is engaged in an electric offensive. Ultium battery technology is an important pivot. Last night GMC unveiled the Hummer EV, which will be built in Factory ZERO from the fall of 2021. In addition, the car manufacturer is experimenting with Cruise Automation in the field of autonomous driving. However, GM is investing a lot less in its production with a total amount of $ 4.2 million (€ 3.5 million). To produce the batteries for all EVs, GM is building a battery plant in Lordstown, Ohio, together with LG Chem. According to GM, the construction of this is at an advanced stage. All in all, it therefore seems that the group is taking major steps towards an electric future.
