Google Chrome has been around for ten years, and to celebrate that, Google has released a major update with a new design. We list the most important innovations for you.
Major Google Chrome update available now
Along with Apple’s Safari, Google Chrome is the most popular browser on both the iPhone and Mac. Good news, then, that the biggest update is waiting for you in a long time. Note: Google says it will roll out the new design gradually. So it may take a while until it is your turn. To keep it clear, we go through the most important improvements below with you.
1. A new look
As soon as you start the new Chrome, the new design immediately catches the eye. Google has opted for rounder edges, new icons and brighter colors. This makes Chrome look a lot simpler, and therefore more organized.
For example, the toolbar has been moved to the bottom of the screen for easier access. In addition, almost everything has been given a new look. For example, the menus and messages are simplified. The new location of the toolbar in particular takes some getting used to, but quickly makes it easier to use the browser. Similar changes have also been made on the Mac, so that the design of the browser on both iOS and macOS fits together nicely.
2. Focus on speed and safety
In addition to a new look, Google is also implementing some useful improvements with the Chrome update. For example, the browser now enters your passwords, address details and credit card number better and faster, provided you have saved these of course. This should make filling in forms a lot faster and almost automate it.
3. Built-in password manager
An extension of this is a much improved built-in password manager from Google. When it’s time to create a new password, Chrome will suggest one to you. This is automatically generated and extremely difficult to crack, so you don’t have to come up with one yourself. Using the password will automatically save it to your Google account so you can use it on all your devices to sign in afterwards.
4. Smart answers in the search bar
The search bar at the top of Chrome is also a lot more versatile. You could always enter a url or Google search term, but from this new version the browser will already answer without you having to press the enter button. This way you can see what the weather forecast will be without opening a website or request the final score of a football match. Google also keeps an eye on the open tabs, so that you can immediately return to an open website if you enter it in the search bar.
5. More options for personalization
Since everyone uses a browser differently, Google also adds some extra options for customizing Chrome. For example, you can now create and use a shortcut for your favorite websites right from the ‘new tab’ page. Also nice: the option to add a background photo when you open a new tab. However, this option only works on the desktop version of Chrome.
6. Shortcuts with 3D Touch
Finally, the Chrome app for the iPhone has received support for 3D Touch. This allows you to call up quick actions when you firmly press the browser’s app icon. This way you can quickly open an incognito tab or visit one of your favorite sites.
