Google Chrome for macOS has received a major update that adds support for macOS Mojave Dark Mode. We show you how to activate and use dark mode.
Google Chrome Dark Mode: How It Works
Google has released version 73 of Chrome for macOS users. The main improvement is support for Dark Mode, which was added to the operating system with the Mojave update. As a result, the browser uses more dark colors, which is especially nice if you are still working on your Mac (Book) at night.
Chrome’s Dark Mode looks similar to the browser’s Incognito mode. You see the dark colors in the menu, your tabs and the start page that you see when you open a new tab. The feature is not activated until you use the dark theme of macOS Mojave. Follow the steps below to enable the new Chrome feature.
- First of all, make sure you have updated Chrome on your Mac to the latest version. Open the browser, click on ‘Chrome’ in the top left of the menu bar and choose ‘About Chrome’. It may also be that the browser has already been automatically updated;
- After this, it will check for updates to update the browser. Wait a moment for the installation and restart Chrome to complete the update process;
- You will see Chrome’s Dark Mode when using macOS Mojave’s dark theme. You can activate this via ‘System Preferences> General’.

And that was it! Apple’s own Mac apps have long supported Mojave’s dark mode, and more and more apps are also getting support for the feature. For example, the Microsoft Office apps for Mac also received support for Dark Mode at the end of last year. Apple’s own browser, Safari, of course, has been working with the feature since the release of macOS Mojave.
