Gboard is Google’s keyboard app that can be found on many phones, and is also an editor’s favorite. In addition to this keyboard app, Google also has its ideas about physical keyboards. Google Japan already shows one, and it is bizarre to say the least.

Gboard Bar

This is the so-called Gboard Bar. That is a physical keyboard with only one row of keys, so a very long row. According to Google, that’s a whole new approach to physical keyboards.

This form is mainly intended to make not being able to find certain characters on a keyboard a thing of the past. Google Japan states that it is difficult to find a character on a physical keyboard because the keys are arranged on a flat surface. So you have to look in two directions, up and down and left and right. To solve that problem, Gboard Bar contains only one row of keys.

The Gboard Bar has a one-dimensional QWERTY layout, but you can also adjust it to ASCII.

Multifunctional

This elongated bar with keys can also be used for other purposes. For example, you can use the Gboard Bar as a ruler or stick to reach the light switch without getting out of your chair. You can also use it as a fly swatter by attaching an extra ‘module’ to it. Google Japan also sees the Gboard Bar as a very suitable keyboard to play the piano together, or to hang up the laundry.

Google Japan is also thinking of a roll-up version. Handy to take with you! And there may be a game version on the horizon that shines in seven colors.

Daily exercise has also been considered. The Gboard Bar is 165 cm long and 6.4 cm wide. That means stretching your arms and legs while typing.

To buy?

Unfortunately, this one Gboard Bar (check the url) is not for sale. You can get started with your 3D printer yourself. Google has made available open source design drawings, circuit diagrams, firmware, and more via GitHub.

Can you see yourself stretching and stretching behind the Gboard Bar? We are very curious!
