Google has proposed ‘My ad center’ in the Netherlands: a feature that should give users more control over the advertising they see. You indicate from which brands and on which topics you want to see more advertisements, and which less.
My Ad Center
Google’s main source of income for Google continues to be the advertising it displays in its search engine and other services. However, users are not always happy with the advertising they see. Of the new ‘My Ad Center’ you can more easily personalize preferences for advertising, Google says in a press release.
Suppose you have just booked your vacation for the summer, then you are probably tired of seeing advertisements about beach holidays all the time. From now on, with My Ad Center, you tap the menu with the three dots next to a holiday ad and select that you want to see fewer such ads. You can also choose to see advertisements about brands or topics that you value, such as discounts on sneakers or gifts for the holidays.
Delete topics
It is also possible that you regularly come across advertisements about topics that you would rather not see. My Ad Center allows you to restrict ads on topics such as: alcohol, dating, weight loss, gambling, pregnancy and parenting. You turn off the relevant switch for each subject.
In addition, it is possible that you mainly see advertising that belongs to a certain target group such as education, relationship status or the sector in which you work. In My Ads Center, you can decide how certain categories apply to your ads. It is still possible not to see any personalized advertising at all and you can also set that. You will still see advertising, but it will be less relevant to you.
Google also stops using cookies
The changes you make in My Ads Center will work on all devices that you’re signed in to your Google Account with. In addition, it has an effect on advertising displayed within Google’s services and advertising on third-party websites. If you are not logged in with your Google account, you can adjust your preferences via the Ad Settings. My ad center is now being rolled out in the Netherlands and Belgium.
Google has previously announced that it will stop browser cookies in 2024 and an alternative will be announced then. cookies according to the surfing behavior of users and thus advertisers can offer targeted advertising.
