After a short test period, Google Maps has now officially added speed cameras and speed limits to the app. This gives you as a road user some useful new information.
Google Maps speed limit now available
In a statement to TechCrunch Google has confirmed that the two features are now available in 40 countries, including the Netherlands. There is no app update available for Maps, which suggests that Google has activated the feature on its servers side. The functions will therefore simply appear in your app.
By showing the Google Maps speed limit and speed cameras, the app competes with Waze and Flitsmeister, two other popular navigation apps that have had these functions for some time. Two weeks ago, iPhoned already discovered that speed cameras were suddenly visible on the route, a function that Google was testing at the time.
As soon as you plan a route in Google Maps, the app shows speed cameras along the road with small orange icons. If you have notifications on, the Google Assistant will also tell you that a filter is coming on the road.
Google is gradually rolling out feature
Google gets this information from official documents and from feedback from users of the Android app. You will now see the speed limit in the lower left corner of the screen.
It is possible that the functions are not immediately visible to you. Google usually rolls out such updates gradually, so that one user can get started with them sooner than another. Now that Google has officially announced the release, it shouldn’t be long before everyone can start using it.
