Have you in? Google Maps entered a destination, you will usually get several options. Google Maps then tends to immediately choose the fastest route. However, it is useful to also check the other routes.

If you look closely you will see a green leaf near one of the routes. If you choose this economical route in Google Maps, a full tank or a charged electric car will last the longest.

Always choose the most economical route

You can also set Google Maps to always choose the economical route. To do this, follow the steps below.

Always choose an economical route in Google Maps

  1. Open Google Maps and set a route;

  2. Tap the button with the three dots (‘…’) at the top;

  3. In the menu that appears, tap ‘Options’;

  4. Turn on the slider next to ‘Preference for fuel-efficient routes’.

If you set this option, Google Maps will always try to provide the economical route, but only if the arrival times are comparable. So if the economical route requires less fuel (but takes a lot longer) then Google Maps will still show the fastest route. You can always choose to manually select the economical route.

If you choose the economical route, it will not only save your tank or your wallet. It is of course also better for the environment if you do not use so much gasoline (or electricity) during a day out.
