Google is testing the ability to translate subtitles in Google Meet in real-time as well. When a speaker speaks in English, the subtitles can now appear in another language right away. Although there is no support for Dutch yet.
Google Meet translated subtitles
You’re probably already familiar with Google’s Live caption feature, which is a feature on Pixel phones that enables real-time captioning of audio. In Google Meet, the popular video meeting tool, it has been possible for some time to speak in English, French or German and to have subtitles appear for all meeting guests.
Google now wants to go one step further so that those subtitles are also immediately translated, the company says in a blog post. In other words, someone speaks in English, and what that person says automatically appears in another language of their choice.
It is in fact an application of Live translate, that is the efficient real-time translations that we know from Google’s Pixel 6 phones. We were already able to extensively test that function in the editorial office and you can see it at work in the video at the bottom of this article.
Dutch support
However, there is also less good news for the translated subtitles that Google is testing. Google Meet will initially only translate subtitles for English speakers and will not translate into Dutch yet. To: French, German, Portuguese and Spanish. Although we expect that Google will eventually support more languages with Live translate subtitles. We already saw on the Pixel 6 series that live translations into Dutch work fine.
Google plans to roll out the new feature to Google Meet business users in the coming weeks. You can then find the translated subtitles on the website and Google Meet app via the menu Settings > Subtitles.
