Google: New advertising in Android apps should be more privacy-friendly

Google comes with a new system for advertising on Android phones. It’s called the ‘Privacy Sandbox’ and Google wants to respond to the demand for advertising that better respects users’ privacy. This is a project that will be tested over the course of several years.

Google’s Privacy Sandbox

In the coming years, Google plans to roll out a completely new system for ads in Android apps, called the “Privacy Sandbox,” Google revealed in an online press conference that Androidworld was able to attend. When you use an app, you automatically share data with the company that developed the app, but Google wants to limit the sharing of that data with third parties. In addition, Google will limit the possibilities for advertisers to collect data undetected.

More than 90 percent of all Android apps are free and as a result, many developers earn their living by showing advertisements. But while we love free apps, Google finds that Android users are increasingly concerned about the data being collected about them.

Systems that protect your privacy

Google has already developed a new set of tools, or APIs, that should lead to more privacy-friendly advertising in apps. Some of those Android APIs are based on existing web advertising tools. Google will now coordinate its proposal with app developers to take their feedback into account, before launching a beta of the Privacy Sandbox at the end of this year. Google’s partners include companies such as Activision Blizzard, Snap and Rovio.

Over the next few years, the new system should replace the current ‘advertising ID’ now used for targeted advertising in apps. the Advert ID will continue to work in its current form for at least another two years. The development of the Privacy Sandbox is completely separate from Android 13.

Swipe to Apple

It is striking that Google also lashes out at Apple – without mentioning the company – which announced last year that users will soon be able to disable personalized advertising for apps. Google says that reckless decisions only hurt app developers and they miss the mark. Advertising that you see that is not personalized leads to less income.

Last year, Google already announced that it wants to take action against trackers in apps that track the user and that more details would follow later. It is now clear that Google was then referring to the new advertising APIs that come with the Privacy Sandbox.

Is it also effective?

However, it remains to be seen whether the Privacy Sandbox actually protects our privacy better. As you could already read, Google always refers to “limiting” various practices that violate our privacy. Think of companies that share our data with third parties or collect data in secret, but the use of the word “restrict” indicates that Google’s new APIs can’t rule out these practices either.

What do you think can a company like Google, which essentially lives off the sale of advertisements online and on telephones, ensure that advertising also becomes more privacy-friendly? Let us know in the comments at the bottom of this article.
