Google has just officially announced its Pixel 7 series. For the first time in Pixel history, the devices are now also coming to the Netherlands. The devices build on the design and capabilities of the Pixel 6 series. Read all about the new devices from Google in this article.
These are the Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro
The Google Pixel 7 and the Google Pixel 7 Pro are the two new high-end devices from Google. That the phones would be announced today is no secret, just like the design and specifications of the smartphones. In May, Google already showed teasers of the phones during its Google I/O 2022 event. In addition, Google has shared design elements and specifications of the new Pixels almost every day in recent weeks.

Same design language
In terms of design, Google gives the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro the same design language as their predecessors. The Pixel 7 devices also get a large horizontal camera island. However, the design has changed in a number of areas.
For example, the Pixel 7 devices each have one color on the back, with the Pixel 6 series the smartphones still had two color shades. The second color shade of the Pixel 7 phones is incorporated in the camera island. The Pixel 6 series had a camera island that was completely black, with the Pixel 7 series it colors along with the sides of the phone. The camera island is also a bit thinner and for a large part now made of aluminum instead of glass. The cameras have been incorporated into this island in a pill form.

The Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro get the same design from Google, although there are a number of differences. For example, the Pixel 7 Pro has a back that is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus, the ‘regular’ Pixel 7 has a back with Gorilla Glass 6. The Pixel 7 Pro will therefore be slightly better protected against fall damage, the Pixel 7 is better protected against scratch. You can read more about how this works exactly here.
The Pixel 7 Pro also has a larger 6.7-inch display, the Pixel 7 has a smaller 6.3-inch panel. The Pixel 7 Pro gets a 120Hz LTPO screen, the regular Pixel 7 has a refresh rate of 90Hz. The screens of the Pixel 7 series are 25 percent brighter than those of the Pixel 6 series.

- Google Pixel 7 Pro: 6.71 inch Full HD+ AMOLED panel, 1440 x 3120 pixels, 120 Hz LTPO

Google Tensor G2
The Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro are powered by the second-generation Google Tensor chip. This chip is baked on a 4mm firing process, in contrast to the 5nm firing process of the first Tensor chip. The second generation will therefore have to use its energy a lot more efficiently. Google promises improvements in computing power, performance and artificial intelligence. It is according to Google’s fastest processor ever and a whopping 60 percent more efficient.
Security and VPN
The 2th Gen Tensor chipset also provides even better security. For example, the Pixel 7 and 7 (Pro) will be the first phones to come with a built-in VPN. This provides improved security between your smartphone and the internet.

Improved cameras
Due to the new Tensor chip, the image processing of the new Pixel 7 series should therefore be even better than that of the Pixel 6 series. This is nice, because in terms of hardware, the Pixel 7 phones make almost no leaps forward compared to their predecessors. Google uses the same 50 MP main camera and the same 12 MP wide-angle lens. Only the 48 MP telephoto lens of the Pixel 7 Pro has changed, Google now uses a sensor from Samsung for this. The Pixel 6 Pro used a 48MP telephoto lens from Sony.
This telephoto lens of the Pixel 7 Pro has also been improved in software. With ‘Super Res Zoom’ you cannot digitally zoom up to 30x, with the Pixel 6 Pro this was still 20x digital zoom. The telephoto lens must also be able to take good photos with less zoom. The telephoto lens is only used from 4x optical zoom, the main camera is used up to this 4x zoom. As a result, photos with, for example, 2x or 3x zoom were of lower quality, because they were digitally zoomed in. According to Google, this digital zoom must now be significantly improved. Software has to rearrange the pixels and this makes the photos less ‘pixelated’.

Camera software
The Pixel 7 series will again have access to the Magic Eraser, with which you can remove disturbing objects from your photo. The Pixel 7 phones will also be able to make sure that you can sharpen blurry faces of people. The ‘double tap to open Snapchat’ will also be present on the Pixel 7 smartphones. The Tensor chipset of the phones also knows how to get blurry photos sharp again. For this, the phone merges photos from the main camera and the wide-angle lens. This even in retrospect, Google calls this ‘Photo Unblur’.
Also new is an accessibility feature called Guided Frame. It helps people with a visual impairment to take better photos. Google will tell you aloud with speech whether you should hold the camera more to the left, right, up or down when shooting another person. And when you use the timer function to take a photo, it counts down aloud.
Android 13 and five years of updates
The new Pixels run on Android 13 and get three Android upgrades and five years of software updates. This means that the Pixel 7 (Pro) will get up to and including Android 16 and will receive security updates through 2027.
In terms of design and functionalities, Android 13 is a small update of Android. Google comes in Android 13 with a few small improvements. For example, in Android 13 you can set the language in which they are displayed per app, there is a more privacy-friendly way to give apps access to photos and files on your device, and there are several improvements for multitasking.
