The Google Pixel 8a is a budget-friendly, fast device with excellent cameras and 7 years of updates. Read the review here to see whether it is a device that meets your wishes and/or requirements.

Google previously launched the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, the review of which you can read here. The Google Pixel 8a is a mid-range smartphone and therefore the budget-friendly option of the Pixel 8 series, but still offers a number of high-end features. This phone is eligible if your budget is limited, but you appreciate good camera quality in combination with clean software with no less than 7 years of support and where fast charging is not the highest priority.

Design
The Google Pixel 8a is an Android device with a simple appearance and handy size of 15.2 x 7.3 x 0.9 mm (L x W x H) and a weight of 188 grams. It consists of an aluminum frame with a matte plastic back. The corners are rounded and we see wider screen edges than we have been used to lately. The sides and back harmonize in color and are available in Obsidian, Porcelain, Bay Blue and Aloe. On the back we see an aluminum strip across the entire width containing the two cameras and the flash. IP-67 indicates that the device is dustproof and waterproof for 30 minutes.

Screen and image
The OLED screen, with Gorilla Glass 3, measures 6.1 inches and has an aspect ratio of 20:9 with 1080 x 2400 pixels. The image refresh is 60 Hz to 120 Hz with Smooth Display and that is adaptive adjustment of the image refresh. The image brightness is high and can reach 2000 nits peak with HDR image. This combination provides a smooth, clear and colorful image under all circumstances.

Processor, memory and software
The Pixel 8a runs on a Google Tensor G3 processor in combination with 8GB LPDRR5x RAM and 128GB storage memory. This is an excellent set for this price range and allows the device to work quickly and smoothly. An additional Titan M2 security processor gives this device extra protection. Wireless communication is carried out via 5G with Nano-SIM or eSIM, up to Wi-Fi 6E, BT5.3, NFC, Google Cast, GPS and other variants. This can be done via cable with the USB-C-3.2 port. The operating system is Android 14, including AI features, and comes with 7 years of Android and security updates! In addition to the standard functions, unlocking works with an optical finger sensor in the glass and extra secure facial recognition. The stereo sound clicks well.

Cameras
On the back we see a bright (F1.9) 64MP Quad main camera with 2x optical zoom and a 13MP wide angle (F2.2). The selfie camera, at the top of the glass on the front, has an F2.2 lens and 13 MP. A rich set of camera functions simplifies use and gives you additional options for adjusting and improving the quality of the photo. Many AI features are also available, including Magic Eraser, Magic Editor, Magic Eraser, Real Tone and Best Take. We are charmed by the quality of the recorded images from a device in this price segment. Video recording is possible up to 4K and 30 to 60 fps and 1080P / 30 to 240 fps.

Battery
The battery has a high capacity of 4500 mAh and can be charged with a maximum of 18 watts. This does not result in top charging times of approximately 2 hours. A charger is not included. QI wireless charging with 7.5 watts charging is supported. With standard use, the battery life is about 24 hours, which can go up to 72 hours if you don’t use it much.

Conclusion
The Pixel 8a is a mid-range device with a solid appearance, excellent image and good processing power. Striking positive elements for this price range are the cameras and the updates for no less than 7 years. The introductory price is still a bit on the high side compared to what is currently being asked for the other Pixel 8 models.
