Grand Prix in Canada postponed due to coronavirus

The Grand Prix of Canada was postponed on Tuesday due to the corona crisis. This brings the number of canceled races during the current Formula 1 season to nine.

The race on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve near Montreal was scheduled for June 14. It had been questionable for a long time whether the Canadian Grand Prix could continue.

“Postponing was not an easy decision,” the organization said in a statement. “The past month, we have been in constant consultation with Formula 1 and representatives from the city of Montreal and the province.” The French Grand Prix on the Circuit Paul Ricard on June 28 is now the first race to continue for the time being.

The GPs of Australia, Bahrain, Vietnam, China, the Netherlands, Spain, Monaco and Azerbaijan already crossed the line earlier. Only the organization of the race in Monaco reported that the Grand Prix will not be held at all this year. Other track owners hope to be able to organize their GP later in the year.

Due to the cancellation of the race in Canada, the Formula 1 calendar has only thirteen Grands Prix. A season must consist of at least eight races to count as a world championship.

The Canadian Grand Prix has been on the calendar since 1967, except for the years 1975, 1987 and 2009. Last year, Lewis Hamilton took the win on the Montreal street circuit and Max Verstappen finished fifth.
