Have Outlook read a message aloud

Have Outlook read out received and sent e-mails. Handy for getting through long texts.

Had a long day and don’t feel like reading all the emails? Or check your own text for errors? Have the emails read aloud in Outlook. This reading function is only available from the Microsoft Office software package. Unfortunately, it is not possible to have it read via the apps on your smartphone or tablet, or if you use Outlook online (outlook.com).

  • Open Microsoft Outlook.
  • click on File.
  • click on Options.
  • click on Accessibility.
  • Under ‘Application display options’, check Show Read Out Loud.
  • click on OK.
  • Open a message in Outlook by double-clicking it.
  • Click at the top if necessary Message.
  • Click on the top right To read aloud.
  • The reading starts immediately. At the top right are reading options: rewind, pause/play, fast forward, settings and stop:
    Read email aloud
  • click on Institutions (the fourth button) to adjust the reading speed.

Have your own typed mail read out like this:

  • Click before the first letter of the answer.
  • Click on the tab in the menu Check.
  • click on To read aloud.
