Here’s how customizable swipes work in Gmail – quickly delete emails, snooze, and more

Swipe actions in Gmail allow you to archive or delete emails. Thanks to the latest update, you can also move them, snooze and more. This is what you should know about customizable swipes in Gmail.

Customizable Gmail Swipes: Here’s how it works

It has been possible to swipe emails left or right in Gmail for years, but you couldn’t select what to do with the messages. The default options were ‘archive’ and ‘delete’. This will change with an update. From now on you can set what happens to an email when you swipe it to the left or right.

This is how you make a customizable swipe in Gmail

  1. Download the latest version of Gmail on your iPad or iPhone;
  2. Open the app, go to settings and press ‘Swipe actions’;
  3. Then indicate what should happen when you swipe an email to the left or right;
  4. Tap the back button to save the settings.

In addition to archiving and deleting, you can also choose to mark messages as unread, move or snooze emails directly. The latter is useful when you do not have time to respond immediately.

Of course you can also give both directions the same task. That way you can delete emails, for example, by swiping left or right. It is not possible to give no action in either direction. You can of course turn off swipe actions completely. The option is on by default.

The latest update is now rolling out and it can take up to two weeks before every Gmail user can get started, Google reports. So you may have to be patient. The update soon follows the redesign for Gmail, which rolled out last month.
