High petrol prices curb demand for second-hand petrol cars

Anyone who cannot fill up across the border sheds a tear while filling up his or her petrol car. The high petrol prices seem to dampen the demand for used cars with a petrol engine. That – and more – is apparent from the monthly market report of Automotive Mediaventions, the parent company of Gaspead.nl and Autotrack.

For a while it seemed that the strong price increase in the average asking prices of second-hand cars seemed to be stabilizing. Where used cars were still for sale for an average of €24,005 on Gasmetaal.nl or Autotrack in May, the average asking price dropped to €23,199 in June. Unfortunately, but true: the average price asked for a second-hand car on the two car sales sites increased by almost €800 in July to €23,992. The average price that the Dutch are willing to pay for a used car increased only minimally between June and July to €19,770, with the result that the difference between the average price that consumers search for and the average asking price has increased proportionally.

Striking in the search behavior of the Dutch consumer: there was less search for cars with a petrol engine in July than in the previous month. Petrol cars were still by far the most popular with a share of 55.8 percent in searches, but that share was 1.5 percentage points lower in July than in June. The decline in the popularity of used petrol cars is probably related to the sharp rise in petrol prices.

The share of hybrid and electric cars in the searches actually increased. In 22.9 percent of the searches, the hunt for a used hybrid was started. In June, that share was 0.8 percentage point lower. Electric cars accounted for 7.3 percent of searches in July. That share was still at 6.9 percent in June. The share of diesels in the searches remains virtually unchanged at 9.5 percent (June: 9.6 percent). People are therefore still looking for a used diesel more often than for an electric used car.

Most searched brands

The top 10 of the most searched brands on Gas Pedal.nl and Autotrack was the same in July as in the previous month. In 10.6 percent of the searches, consumers focused on a used Volkswagen. This makes Volkswagen the most popular car brand on the two sales platforms, followed by Audi (8.5 percent) and BMW (8 percent). German models are very well represented in the top 10 of most sought-after car models. The Golf is the most popular used car, followed by the Polo and BMW 3 series.

The Netherlands station wagon and automatic transmission country

The station wagon remains the most popular body style for the Dutch used car searcher. In no less than 23.4 percent of the searches, the hunt for a new pack mule was opened. In second place we find the traditional hatchback (22.8 percent). The SUV is in third place with a share of 15 percent. The sedan also remains quite popular (9.4 percent share, place 4). The MPV is in fifth place with 8.6 percent of the searches, followed by the convertible in sixth place (5.7 percent). In 81 percent of the online searches, the Dutch searched for a car with an automatic transmission. The remaining 19 percent was – you guessed it – for cars with a manual transmission.
