Historical: no new cars sold in India in April

That hardly any new cars were sold in April in various European countries was a hard but expected blow. However, it was even worse in India. No (!) New cars were sold there last month.

The sales figures of India are normally of a completely different order than here in Europe. In April, the most densely populated country in the world (1.3 billion inhabitants) sold no fewer than 300,000 new cars in April. Because of the complete lockdown, a historic low was recorded last month, because according to the latest figures, no new car was sold in India. Sakal Times and Bloomberg report this, among others.

India has been in a complete lockdown since March 25 and that has also put the car dealers, factories and suppliers almost completely inactive. Although several hundred cars were reportedly exported through a single port that was just open, virtually nothing else happened. According to the first estimates, the local car industry is currently heading for a loss of converted € 18 billion. This is of course strongly dependent on when the lockdown is lifted.

Normally Maruti Suzuki is the top seller. That manufacturer still sold more than 130,000 cars in April 2019. Hyundai then took second place, with 42,000 units. Mahindra of India followed in third place, with a mere 19,000 copies. Other big players are Tata, Honda and Toyota.
