Earaches can be treated well with home remedies. One of the most effective remedies for earaches is onion. We’ll show you how to make onion sachets and how to best use other home remedies.
The onion has a long tradition as a home remedy. The reason for this is, among other things, the sulfur compounds it contains, which have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects: If the onion is chopped, the sulfur-containing leek oils are released. These essential oils not only make your eyes water, but they also inhibit the growth of bacteria, viruses and fungi.
In addition, the leek oils in the onion help to loosen mucus in cold symptoms such as a runny nose or cough and to relieve inflammation. All of these are properties that make onions an indispensable home remedy for earaches.
Tried-and-tested home remedy for earaches: onion sachets
You can treat earaches with onions as a tried and tested home remedy. To do this, make warm onion bags. The combination of the active ingredients of the onion and the heat can have a pain-relieving, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and decongestant effect on ear pain.
You need:
- an old sock (without a hole) or a cotton cloth
- a large onion (or two small ones)
- a headband, scarf or hat
- a saucepan with a lid
- a heat-resistant bowl for a water bath
This is how you make onion sachets:
-
Cut the onion into fine cubes.
- Stuff the onion cubes into the cloth or sock.
- Place the filled sock in the fireproof bowl and place it in the cooking pot filled with a little water.
- Heat the water with the lid closed so that the onion bag can slowly warm up in the water bath. Make sure that no water gets into the bowl with the onion bag.
- Once the onion bag has reached a little more than body temperature, squeeze it out carefully. This is how the valuable onion juice comes out. Tip: Hold the bag on your forearm to check the temperature. If it feels comfortable there, you can use it.
- Then place the onion bag on the sore ear.
- To prevent it from slipping, secure it with the headband, scarf or hat.
- You can leave the onion bag on your ear for one to two hours – or as long as is comfortable. Of course, the smell takes some getting used to, but the warmth and anti-inflammatory properties of the onion work immediately.
- You can repeat this application several times a day.
If the onion bag is too much effort for you, you can simply squeeze an onion and soak a pad with the juice as a home remedy for earache (you can find reusable pads in the avocado store, for example). Then place the pad on the painful ear and leave it on for about 20 minutes.
Other home remedies for ear pain
If you have ear pain but find the smell of onions very unpleasant, there are alternatives. Numerous other home remedies also help against ear pain:
-
Heat: Heat has a pain-relieving effect on mild ear pain. A cherry stone pillow is ideal, which you can simply heat to a comfortable temperature and place on the inflamed ear for 20 minutes. (You can find cherry stone pillows in the avocado store, for example, or you can also make a cherry stone pillow yourself.)
-
Potato wrap: Boiled potatoes retain heat and have a pain-relieving effect. Simply boil two to three peeled potatoes, mash them, wrap them in a cotton cloth and place the wrap on the sore ear.
-
Parsley sachets: Parsley has a disinfectant effect and is a good home remedy for earaches. To make a parsley sachet, finely chop a bunch of parsley and grate the herb a little so that the plant sap with its active ingredients can escape. Wrap the chopped parsley in a warm, damp cotton cloth and place it on the affected ear for half an hour.
-
Mustard flour: Mustard flour is an old home remedy and helps with colds – thanks to its strong germicidal effect, it also helps with earaches. To do this, mix fresh mustard flour with a little lukewarm water. Spread the paste on a cotton cloth. Fold it up and place it on the affected ear for 15 minutes. If the skin starts to burn, remove the cloth immediately!
Be careful with home remedies for earaches
Ear pain is not something to be trifled with. The home remedies presented here are intended to provide relief from symptoms at the first signs of illness. However, if the pain does not go away, you should seek medical advice to be on the safe side. This is particularly true for babies and small children, where ear pain occurs much more often because the Eustachian tube is still shortened. Protracted middle ear infections can lead to attacks of dizziness and seriously impair hearing.
