Honda has set concrete goals for the phasing out of combustion engines. By 2040, all Hondas will be electrically powered, in the years before the brand has taken a bigger step in that direction.
Honda announced earlier this year that it will only sell electrified cars in Europe after 2022. There was still no concrete goal for switching to electrically powered cars, but now brand new CEO Toshihiro Mibe provides clarity. A first major step in that direction will come in 2030, when Honda wants 40 percent of all new cars sold fully electric. These are not only BEVs, but also cars with a fuel cell. In 2035, the share will already be 80 percent and then 100 percent in 2040.
An important role in this transition is played by a new EV platform from Honda. That is called e: Architecture. Several models will appear on this base in the second half of this decade. These will be introduced first on the North American market, but will then also go to other global markets. It will therefore be a while for Europe to wait and it also seems that we do not have to expect anything electric for the e: Architecture models. Electric models are already arriving fairly quickly in the US. Honda is working with General Motors on electrically powered cars, from which both Honda and Acura will each reap one model in 2023.
