Honda E hurt by demand for electric SUVs

The popularity of SUVs once again means that a model has to clear the field. The Honda E has already given up after one generation.

Less than four years ago, Honda stole the show at the IAA in Frankfurt with the Honda E. A mischievous EV with retro design and an interior like we had never seen before. The creativity of the Japanese was not really rewarded with generous sales figures, and that is largely due to the Achilles heel of the Honda E: its driving range. The Honda E has never been impressive in that area and in 2023, 220 km according to the WLTP cycle is even downright disappointing, while the price is relatively high. Here in the Netherlands, the sales counter is therefore at a meager 167 units, this year only four have been sold so far. The chance that there will be many more is small. Honda does not intend to give the Honda E another (perhaps more useful) follow-up.

Honda e:Ny1

The Honda e:Ny1 will hopefully attract more people to the Honda showroom

After one generation, it will end sooner or later for the Honda E, the top woman of Honda’s British branch explains. Coach. According to her, there will no longer be any cars in the size of the Honda E, because “the market demands SUVs” and Honda is therefore fully committed to SUVs. Honda is also taking that road in the electrical field with the Honda e:Ny1. With a full battery, it comes almost twice as far as the Honda E and is therefore a lot more promising in that sense. With a Dutch starting price of €48,750 (so just a bit too much for a SEPP subsidy) and a driving range of 419 km, the e:Ny1 will not have an easy time here either. It is not yet known when the Honda E will go out of production. That will probably take another year or two.
