Honda has rolled out a recall for the 2022 and 2024-2025 CRF1100 Africa Twin. Due to a software error in the electronic fuel injection, the engine may stall or lose power when the wheelie control is activated.
Back in May 2023, Honda discovered that the wheelie control on the 2022 CRF1100 Africa Twin was not functioning properly and started an investigation. In an initial investigation, Honda concluded in August that year that the wheelie control did not function as intended.
In December 2023, a Product Update campaign was started for an update of the F1 ECU software of the 2022 Africa Twin, which restored the wheelie control function. According to the evaluation at the time, there was no safety issue and therefore a recall was not necessary.
However, on August 6 this year, Honda received another report about the issue from the Canadian market, where the Product Update software had already been installed. Honda restarted the investigation. Barely a week later, Honda received a second report on the issue, this time an Africa Twin from the American market that had also already been provided with the software update.
This made Honda decide on November 14, 2024 to roll out a recall, because in theory safety is at stake. New software for the wheelie control will be installed at the Honda dealer.
