This typical Japanese ‘van’ is a Honda S-MX and that is a true rarity in the Netherlands. Moreover, it is a car about which the strangest rumors are circulating.
The Honda S-MX is not a kei-car, it is too big for that. Nevertheless, with its square shapes, bumpers extended far down and vertical flanks, it is a typical product for the Japanese domestic market, and a direct rival to a car like the Toyota bB. The Honda S-MX came on the market in 1996 and always has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with a four-speed automatic transmission. Also unusual: his carriage is asymmetrical. There is only one door on the right side photographed here, but there is a rear door on the other side. That is not very special for an MPV-like from the nineties, only in comparable cases it was almost always a sliding door.
The wildest stories are circulating about the S-MX. Honda itself does not admit it, but it is whispered that this car is specifically intended for the most intimate moments of human existence. We will never know for sure whether that is true, but the commercial below leaves little to the imagination.
In any case, the car itself seems like no other suitable for it, with its square shapes and dark windows. The seats and rear seats can also be completely flat, after which a large ‘bed’ is created. Despite the childish sniggering that we can hardly suppress, the idea is not so crazy. Just think: in large Japanese cities privacy is often not endlessly available and then a car may be a nice refuge for the actions that we will not describe in more detail here. jalopniks Jason Torchinsky by the way, even sees something suspicious in the name: turn the ‘M’ a quarter turn and there is a completely different word.
This specific Honda S-MX is from January 1997 and has its English registration since 2008. It is unfortunately not known whether the current owner simply thought it was a nice model or mainly fell for the other qualities of the S-MX.
