Honda presents a new version of the StepWGN in Japan. The seemingly ultimate practical MPV gets a particularly sleek body and remains available as a hybrid.
The StepWGN is a quintessentially Japanese thing, with its relatively (and absolutely) tall and square carriage. At the same time, it is actually strange that something like this cannot be sold elsewhere in the world, because this seems to be a true king when it comes to offering as much space as possible in a still relatively compact coach. For example, eight people should be able to travel, although the interior can also be arranged very differently if desired.
Unfortunately, we do not know exactly how big the newcomer is, but it is clear that it looks considerably sleeker than its predecessor, launched in 2015 (and facelifted in 2017). Lots of straight lines give it a nice modern look. As before, the StepWGN comes in two flavors, the Air and the Spada. The Air has a light, spacious and homely interior, the Spada has more dark tones and therefore, according to Honda, an extra high-quality appearance.
At the back, it is striking that ‘just’ a one-piece tailgate has been used again. The outgoing StepWGN had a two-piece example, which reportedly could be used as ‘van doors’ and as a regular tailgate.
The StepWGN is called ‘e:HEV’, indicating that it is a hybrid. That also applied to the previous type, so it is not very surprising. There are unfortunately no exact specifications, so we have to make do with this. One thing is certain: this mobile ballroom is not coming to Europe.
