Hongqi launches electric SUV for senior officials

The Chinese Hongqi has found its way to the Netherlands. With the E-HS9, it sells an angular electric SUV here. The Hongqis may also look very different in the Netherlands. These patent plates show a new and never-before-seen conceptual SUV.

In April 2021, Hongqi showed a study model with the L Concept with which the brand showed what you can expect from part of the brand in the future in terms of design. AutoWeek has found patent drawings of a new Hongqi study model in the database of a large patent office. In contrast to the L Concept, that is not a sedan, but an SUV. It is topped with a similar design language as the L Concept. We see round shapes, rear lights made up of horizontal segments and a fierce front with a huge fence flanked by relatively small headlights.

Hongqi – the luxury brand of FAW – has a special model line in its home country of China with cars that cannot be bought by everyone, but that are reserved for high-ranking government officials, among others. Those cars have an L in the name followed by a number. Hongqi supplies the L5, L7 and L9, successively 5.55, 6.01 and 6.4 meter long sedans with a strong retro design. Given that the L Concept shown last year had an L in its name, it is likely that Hongqi was looking ahead at how it will design its exclusive L models with that concept car. That series of exclusive models can just be expanded with an SUV.

Does this Hongqi design also seep through to the other models? Probably not, because it is likely that Hongqi does not want to give its exclusive cars the same design language as the models that can be bought ‘by the people’.
