To encourage the purchase of electric cars by private individuals, the government has set up a subsidy scheme. If you buy or privately lease an electric car, you may qualify. How does it work?
The Private Electric Passenger Car Subsidy (also called SEPP) applies to new and used electric passenger cars in the smaller and compact middle class. It started in July 2020 and will run until July 1, 2025. It involves a few thousand euros per car. A caveat: there is a maximum per year on the number of cars that can receive a subsidy. If the pot is empty in a year, then it ends. So while stocks last.
High amount of subsidy for electric cars
What does the subsidy for electric cars look like then? You can get the subsidy for both new and used electric cars. You will receive a different amount in 2022. for a new car you get 3,350 euros. If you opt for a used electric car, you will receive 2,000 euros in the bank account. If you have a private lease car, this can be settled in several monthly instalments.
As mentioned, there is a maximum budget for the following year. 71 million euros will be distributed among new cars, and 20.4 million euros is available for used cars. And experience shows that that pot can be empty fairly quickly!

For which electric cars can you apply for the subsidy?
There are some conditions attached to the car for which you want to apply for a subsidy. We briefly summarize them here.
- The electric car must be a 100% electric passenger car with a range of at least 120 kilometers.
- The list price (original new price including VAT, BPM and options from the manufacturer) as registered in the vehicle registration register (RDW) must be between €12,000 and €45,000.
- The car was produced as an electric passenger car and may not have been converted into an electric car.
- For a subsidy in 2022, the car must have a first admission (registration) with the RDW on or after 1 January 2022. Pay particular attention to this with private lease, because some lease companies have pre-registered. Those cars are therefore not eligible for the subsidy.
As an indication, you will find an overview of the cars for which you could apply for a subsidy in the AutoWeek CarBase. You can apply for the subsidy for a new car or a used electric car. Pay attention to the range that must be above 120 km. And are you going for a private lease of your electric car? Then you will also see the amounts for this.
How do you apply for the subsidy?
There are a few important things to keep in mind before applying for the grant.
You must sign the purchase contract or private lease contract for the car on or after January 1, 2022. The car may also not have been transferred to you at the RDW until January 1, 2022 and, as mentioned, you must also be the first to have this car put in your name.
You must then apply for the subsidy online and with your DigiD via the RVO website. Don’t wait too long with all this. The subsidy for new cars ran out on June 7, 2021 last year, the subsidy for used cars continued until August 28, 2021. It is simply a matter of ‘first come, first served’. So make sure you get there on time!
