To turn off an iPhone or iPad, press one or more buttons. But which these are depends on the type of device.
Different models
Turning an iPhone or iPad off and on works with physical buttons on the device. Which buttons those are depends on the type of iPhone or iPad. Apple has released several models over the years. In addition, some buttons have been moved or even disappeared.
If you have iOS/iPadOS 15 on your device, you can also forget all the buttons and turn the device off via the Settings app. In the app, tap General > Turn off.
Turn off iPhone X or later
The latest models of iPhones are turned off with two buttons: the volume button on the left side of the phone and the larger side button on the right. The steps below apply to the iPhone X, XS, and 11.
- Press one of the volume buttons and the side button at the same time.
- Keep the buttons pressed until the ‘Turn off’ slider appears.
- Swipe left to right on the Shutdown button.
The device switches off. Press and hold the side button on the right side of the phone until the Apple logo appears to turn the phone back on.
Turn off iPhone 6, 7, 8 and SE (2nd generation)
The iPhone models 6, 7, 8, and SE (second generation) people can turn off and on with one button.
- Press and hold the side button on the right side of the phone until the ‘Power off’ slider appears.
- Swipe left to right on the Shutdown button.
The device switches off. Turn the phone back on by pressing and holding the side button on the right side of the phone until the Apple logo appears.
Turn off iPhone 5, SE (1st generation)
On old iPhone models, the button to restart is located on top of the device.
- Press and hold the button on the top of the phone until the ‘Power off’ slider appears.
- Swipe left to right on the Shutdown button.
The device switches off. To turn the phone back on, press and hold the top button until the Apple logo appears.
Turn off iPad with Face ID
There are several models of the iPad on the market. To distinguish how to turn off the iPad, we look at two functionalities. iPads that have facial recognition (Face ID) and iPads with fingerprint recognition (Touch ID). iPads with Face ID do not have a round button at the bottom of the screen. Reboot these iPads as follows:
- Hold the iPad in a vertical position.
- Press one of the volume buttons on the right and the button on top of the device at the same time.
- Keep the buttons pressed until the ‘Turn off’ slider appears.
- Swipe left to right on the Shutdown button.
The device switches off. Turn the tablet back on by pressing and holding the top button until the Apple logo appears.
Turn off iPad with Touch ID
Follow the steps below to turn off and on an iPad with Touch ID (fingerprint recognition).
- Hold the iPad in a vertical position.
- Press and hold the button on the top of the iPad until the ‘Power off’ slider appears.
- Swipe left to right on the Shutdown button.
The device switches off. To turn the tablet back on, press and hold the top button until the Apple logo appears.
