How long can a permanent tooth erupt?

My 9 year old son had an upper incisor this summer that was already loose. While playing, he went out by an elbow bump against his mouth. Now we are 6 months further and the permanent tooth is not yet through. Should I be concerned about this?

Answer

Dear Ellen,

It is possible that the permanent tooth – which was breaking through – was disturbed by the impact of its breakthrough. It would be best to have it looked at by the dentist. He can make an X-ray to see how it is. After all, there may also be another cause of the disrupted breakthrough (for example, another permanent tooth that is in the way).

If a milk tooth is loose and it is lost prematurely (for example due to the classic with a cord and the door), the permanent tooth will usually break through within a month. If this does not happen, it is best to check this with the dentist.

Kind regards,

Jannick
