How long do you have to study to become a surgeon, and how high do you have to get to start the training?

I am 14 years old, in European school and will start my 5th year of secondary school in September. In our school we have a different system and we have 7 high school years. This year we have to make choices for next year, which subjects we want to continue with. I am interested in becoming a surgeon or gynaecologist. Which subjects should you definitely choose to start these courses?

Answer

If you want to become a surgeon, you have to study medicine. Normal intelligence and strong perseverance are sufficient for this. In Flanders, one must pass an entrance exam. After six years of study one becomes a doctor, and the specialization can be started. This is done via an internship supervisor (usually working in a university hospital), selection is usually done by a group of experienced surgeons, criteria are not imposed externally. Certainly not only study results will serve as criteria. The training also lasts six years (the surgeon in training receives a “fair” wage during the training).
