Most bats in our area mate in the fall before going into hibernation. However, the egg is not fertilized immediately. The female stores the male’s sperm in a special organ and keeps it alive during her hibernation. In the spring, when the bats wake up, the actual fertilization takes place. After about 4 months, (usually only) one young is born, which is then nursed by the mother.
