How many years on average pass between the death of two partners in Belgium?

… And they lived happily ever after.

No, it usually doesn’t work that way, but how much time on average passes between the date of death of the two persons of a married couple in Belgium?

Asker: Bernard, 43 years old

Answer

This is very difficult to figure out. There are differences ranging from a few weeks/days (if it is not a couple involved in one accident) to decades.

One can consult the death statistics for this, but I doubt whether anyone has done so.

One can try to calculate an average, based on the fact that an average woman lives 4-5 years longer than the average man and the age difference for that specific couple.

Of course, an average means nothing for one individual. A healthy 80-something will probably have a better life expectancy than a sickly 60-something.

To complicate matters even more, it is believed that a man married to a younger woman lives on average slightly longer than a man married to a partner of the same age and even longer than an unmarried man.
