How to copy text from Windows to smartphone

If you are using Windows 10 or 11 and have an Android smartphone, you can copy and paste texts between those devices. You do need a specific app for that on your smartphone. In this article we explain exactly how to proceed.

We’ll start with Windows, as we need to set up the clipboard. Open the Start menu and type in clipboard. Select the option Clipboard Settings. Windows 11 users must first select the magnifying glass before they can look up the same settings. In this menu it is the intention that we clipboard history activate it by moving the slider to the right.

Do the same with the regulator under the heading Sync between devices. Make sure you fill the ball next to Automatically sync copied text. Then you know for sure that the text will go to the cloud and will be available on your Android smartphone.

Now we need to download that specific app on the Android device. It’s about the keyboard application Swiftkey, which Microsoft owns. After installing, open the app on your smartphone or tablet and log in with your Microsoft account. This must be the same Microsoft account you signed in to on the device with Windows 10 or Windows 11 on board.

On the left in the menu is a Rich Input-option. Tap on that and then select clipboard. All sliders on this page are supposed to be to the left and turn blue.

Now it’s time for the Swiftkey keyboard to become the default keyboard app on your smartphone or tablet. You arrange that through Settings > System(settings) (which varies by Android device) > Keyboard and input method.

You can also use the search bar at the top of the settings app on Android to search for the keyboard settings. Select Current keyboard and choose Swiftkey from.

Sync text between Windows and Android

Now we can finally copy and paste texts between Windows and Android. Open a word processor on Windows, type in a line (it can be anything you want) and press Ctrl + C. Now the text will be synced to the cloud. Grab your Android and open your browser (or a word processor) and press an empty text field. Swiftkey will now come forward. On that keyboard you will see the icon of a clipboard. Press that to see what you copied. Now select the option you need and the text will appear on the screen.

You can of course also copy and paste texts from Android to Windows. You go to a text field, fill in what you want and select that line of text. Then choose the option to copy and go to your Windows device. It is then stored on your computer’s clipboard. Copied texts disappear after an hour; but you can pin certain things and keep them that way for when you need them.
