How to enable Google Assistant on Chrome browser on Android

How to enable Google Assistant on Chrome browser on Android

Five years ago, Google launched the Assistant, Google’s ‘smart voice assistant’ that is conquering more and more living rooms. However, in the Chrome browser on Android, Google has stuck with its old voice technology. That is, unless you take these steps to enable Assistant in Google Chrome.

Google Assistant in Chrome

Google Maps, Chrome and the Play Store are a bunch of apps that have at least one thing in common, and that’s the inclusion of Google’s standard speech recognition. One disadvantage of this form of speech recognition is, among other things, that it can only work with one language at a time. Do you prefer to use Google’s voice assistant in English, but is the phone set to Dutch? Then this won’t work. You must first change the system language.

Along with support for multiple system languages, the Speech Recognition Assistant on Android offers a more modern look. It is of course not the most important part of the switch from Google’s voice input to Assistant, but it is a nice bonus. Those who want to be able to enjoy the appearance and speech support in several languages at the same time can now go to Google Chrome on Android.

However, the function still has to be turned on manually. We explain exactly how this works below.

Enable assistant flag

Google is currently testing the feature in its ‘flag’ system. This system allows testing features in Chrome to be turned on and off manually. Sometimes such features are only available in a beta version of the Chrome browser, but the Assistant feature is not. If you use the Chrome browser that was on your Android phone after purchase, you are ready to get started with the steps below.

  1. Open the Chrome browser on Android
  2. Navigate through the navigation bar nasty Chrome://flags
  3. Type in the search bar omnibox assistant voice search
  4. Then click on it dropdown menu
  5. Select Enabled to enable Assistant in Chrome
  6. click on Restart if Chrome asks, and close (and open) him again afterwards

It can sometimes take a few hours for the Assistant to appear in your Chrome browser. Did you manage to enable the Assistant in Chrome on Android? What are your reasons for switching to Assistant from Android’s default voice input? Be sure to let us know in the comments below this article.
