After two versions for developers, Apple has just made available its first public beta of iOS and iPadOS 14. Here’s how to install it, taking some precautions.
As promised during the virtual opening conference of WWDC 2020, Apple has just made a beta version of iOS and iPadOS 14 available to the general public. The opportunity to take the plunge for those who want to rub shoulders with new features in Apple’s mobile operating systems.
Be careful, however, if the pleasure of discovering new functions is a very good motivation, betas are not finalized programs. This involves at least two things. The first, the bugs can be numerous, the instability problematic on a daily basis and some of your applications may no longer work properly. The second, being a beta tester involves playing the game a minimum and therefore contributing to the software improvement effort by reporting the bugs you encounter as accurately as possible.
That said, if you’re still motivated, here’s how to install the iOS and iPadOS 14 Public Beta on your iPhone and iPad.
To safeguard
First thing, before you start, back up your iPhone or iPad. If you are used to doing them in the cloud, you just have to go to Settings / Apple ID / iCloud / iCloud Backup and Save now. If you’re still going through a computer, plug your iPhone into your PC or Mac, then in iTunes or Finder, start the backup.
From your iPhone or iPad, now go to beta.apple.com. Authenticate or register. Then, on the Apple Beta Software Program page, choose iOS or iPadOS.
Download profile
On the home page, in its part To start up, click on Register your device. You will now need to download a profile that will allow the installation of the beta. You can also go to beta.apple.com/profile.
Press the Download Profile button and allow the download.

Install profile
Still on your iPhone or iPad, now go to Settings / General / Profile. Tap on the iOS 14 & iPadOS 14 Beta Software Program profile. At the top right of the screen, tap Install. Enter your code, and validate your agreement again by tapping on Install, and Install again.

Your iPhone or iPad prompts you to restart to apply the changes. Restart.
Start the download and installation of the beta
Once the iPhone has restarted, go to Settings / General / Software update and tap on Download and install the Public Beta… Which is offered to you. Also make sure that automatic updates are enabled. The future betas will thus be installed without intervention.
