Thermal paste is the key ingredient to ensure optimum heat dissipation from the processor. But you have to know how and where to place it. Here are our tips.
When mounting a PC, it is important to properly evacuate the heat emitted by the processor. This requires the use of a cooling system (fan, “water cooling”, etc.), but also the essential thermal paste. The latter is placed between the processor and its cooling system and ensures optimal heat transfer between the two components. Here’s how to properly install it:
- If you use your own thermal grease, you must remove the one installed on the support of the cooling system. To do this, use a paper towel that is not too smooth to be able to scrape the existing paste.
- The thermal paste must be deposited in a thin layer, and above all well distributed over the entire surface.
- If the thermal grease is a little solid, drop a small amount in the middle of the processor, then three more dots per diagonal.

- If the thermal paste is a little runny, spread it over the processor without it overflowing. If it overflows, use a cotton swab, a paper towel, or even a plastic card to remove the excess.
