A new web extension format launched by Google serves as a shortcut for opening new documents online on many platforms.
A little over a year ago, Google launched a new .new domain extension. Associated with Google tools, this new domain extension allows you to launch a specific action on a service, by simply entering the domain URL ending in .new in the address bar of a browser.
Recently, Google, through its service Google Registry which allows domain names to be registered, has extended the possibility of using the .new extension to third-party services.
Platforms wishing to do so can now benefit from their .new domain now to allow their users to launch a specific action using a simple URL. Here are all the shortcuts you need to know.
Google tools
The .new extension allows you to quickly open a number of documents using various tools in the Google Suite. To work, however, you will need to make sure you are already logged in to your Google account.
- docs.new / doc.new / document.new : open a new document in Google Docs
- sheets.new / sheet.new / spreadsheet.new : open a new spreadsheet in Google Sheets
- slides.new / slide.new / deck.new / presentation.new : open a new slideshow in Google Slides
- forms.new / form.new : open a new form in Google Forms
- sites.new / site.new / website.new : create a new site in Google Sites
- cal.new : create an event in Google Calendar
- keep.new / notes.new / note.new : create a new note in Google Keep

Third-party tools
The opening of the .new extension to third-party services allows them to offer their users shortcuts to quickly launch an action.
- playlist.new / podcast.new : create a playlist in Spotify
- story.new : write a new post on Medium
- canva.new / design.new : create a new design on Canva
- link.new / bitly.new : create a new shortened URL on bit.ly
- sell.new / shop.new : sell an item on eBay
- repo.new / gist.new : create a new project on Github
Here again, you will need to be connected to the various services beforehand for the use of the .new URL to work immediately.
If this selection of URLs in .new is still limited for the time being, other services should quickly use this new domain extension.
Microsoft should for example activate the domain soon word.new to allow its users to open a new document in Office Online.
